The name "St. Marys" comes from an old Irish Catholic chapel called Santa Marta which was built on the banks of the river in 1859 by Father John Ahern and Mother Ann Sullivan. The chapel served as a place of worship for many years before being moved to its present location in 1907. The parish was formally organized in 1881 when Father John Ahern, a native of Ireland who had come to America to become a priest, erected a cross on the bank of the river near his home and named it after Our Lady of Loreto which he had seen while visiting Spain in 1782. In 1883, Father James Crowley established another parish in what is now northeast Georgia - Stations Parish - within St.Marys church precinct and donated land for a new church on Church Hill (now Good Hope Road). Construction began on the new church in 1885 and it opened for services that fall. In 1912, Notre Dame de la Gorce Abbey purchased land east of town along Good Hope Road for use as an abbey school where children from surrounding villages could attend classes free of charge underprivileged young women from central Georgians were taught until 1928 when they became nuns and their teaching staff were transferred to Rome International Airport's nearby Rheims School which later became Saint Francis Xavier University SaintMarys made national headlines again when neo-Nazis marched through town bearing Confederate flags during protests against slavery throughout much of suburban Atlanta during World War II! Some residents chose to stay put despite fear that local businesses would be affected if anything negative occurred; however some decided to leave their homes into hiding with only enough food for two days per week . In 1865, during Reconstruction followingCivil War America's transformation into a Yankee state, many African American families moved to St. Marys from nearby Atlanta due to job opportunities in their newly freed black citizens' new society. By 1870 census figures there were over one hundred black households living inSaintMarys alone compared with just thirty-one white households! This formative period for African American community development here began long before integration even came about nationally at that time!
