St. Marys, Georgia is a town in northeast Georgia that is the seat of Washington County. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settlement on the current site of St. Marys date back to 1814 when a group of Methodist Episcopal missionaries from Philadelphia arrived in what is now Washington County and founded the small community of Oberlin on Marilla Creek. In 1827, Reverend James Aiken organized a group of Presbyterian ministers who named their new community after one of their own number—Mary Frances—who had died in an accident while travelling with her husband and son overland to Milledgeville, Alabama. The name stuck and by 1830, there were three churches in Oberlin: one Congregational (founded by James Aiken), one Presbyterian (founded by Alexander McMurtry) and one Baptist (founded by Rev. John Fenton). In 1838, following its incorporation as a village, Oberlin completed construction of its first schoolhouse which still stands today on First Street south of Old Stony Point Road - just east of present-day Stony Point Mall - and soon became an important center for education within Washington County surplus land sales process related to western expansion during Jacksonian era United States presidency period It was not until 1861 that voters passed an ordinance establishing county government with a mayor/ recorder/ assessor system instead of rural vestry form civil government typical at time First election held November 14th 1861 with Abram Barnes as Mayor; Richard Boggs as Recorder; John Lyden as Assessor On May 3rd 1865 members voted 4 to 1 to incorporate as Village but no action taken until October 11th 1865 when note was sent from above stating “Ville Platte Expired” due lack funds

St. Marys, Georgia is a small town in the unusual and interesting counties of Clayton and Preble in northwest Georgia. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hawkinsville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what became St. Marys was Akins J. Berry who arrived in 1822 on a horse and wagon from Kentucky. He built a cabin near today's intersection of US Highway 231 and US Highway 11 (Berry Road). Akin's son, James Berry, also settled there about 1824-25 when he married Sarah Henshawe, daughter of General Daniel Henshawe of Augusta,Georgia Akin's grandson George Washington Berry set up shop as a general merchandise store around 1830 just east of present day US 231/11 milepost #2 on what is now Robert Bowers Boulevard (now known as Greenbank Drive). From this business George started farming land that later became part of the village with his brother-in-law David Overstreet becoming its first postmaster in 1837 In 1840 residents named their new community after Blessed Virgin Mary which included parts of Clayton County including what are now Springdale Road and Park Avenue north to south while Southside Roads ran east to west starting at Cobb Mill then proceeding northeasterly to Waltham where they turned back westerly to come to I-75 before continuing easterly past present day Springdale Rd., current day FM 1260 & Sanford Drive into Preble County . Most likely due to popular demand some portions were renamed such as Magnolia Avenue after Lady Baltimore who resided at one time within walking distance from our little town . Mrs Oakland was so impressed by this dedication that she donated her entire acreage between Howell Mill Road & Park Ave so we could build St John's Catholic Church on it Pope Pius IX dedicated Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Parish School District #1 directly across Howell Mill Road from St John’s Chapel in 1870 CE even though it had been established as an all female school district back in 1858! So much for local control... One cannot help but ponder why despite being located adjacent to other flourishing villages like Romeoville (3 miles) & Athens (5 miles), St. John’s never grew large enough either financially or spiritually nor did it achieve international fame like nearby Romeoville or Athens during their respective boom years? Why not because its theology wasn’t up to par? Afterall these years since Pius IX blessed our little church with his Apostolic letter “Quadragesimo Anno Domini 1910″ only 4 families showed up for services offered each Sunday morning… maybe they didn’t really need help from God given how rich their counterparts already were? It seems history does not always reflect average citizens' everyday lives hereabouts; something that must be taken into account when making decisions affecting futuregrowth! In any case, things changed dramatically for good soon thereafter when Father Emanuel Goodspeed came along and began preaching right next door(!) What followed next should have been no surprise considering Father Goodspeed had spent many years livingvirtuously throughout Romeoville and surrounding areas helping those less fortunate than himself while also indulging himself heretofore unspeakably... however some would have you believe that Father Goodspeed essentially abandoned all sense of mercy & compassion upon arriving finally nestled amongst us here at StJohn's! His replacement – more appropriately called “Father Gabriel” whose arrival signaled an end times/apocalyptic era according to some – led ultimatelyto utter dysfunction within the church culminating with several scandals which rocked our tiny community over the ensuing decade or two leading inevitablyto steady vacancy rates until recently when Holy Name Parish finally bought most if not all remaining parcels thereby avoiding another round of irreparable defections among its members . Nowadays we enjoy quite an eclectic mixof people representing various faiths practicing different aspectsoftrials practised by various Native American tribes under one roof ! How cool is THAT?!
The first church in St. Marys was built in 1794 by Reverend John Hudgins, the first English missionary to Georgia. The current building was erected in 1851 and is a Gothic Revival structure. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
