St. Marys, Georgia is a small town located in south central Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the patron saint ofGeorgia-Mary. It was founded by Methodists in 1827 and named for her because she was the only woman to be ordained an apostle of Jesus Christ by God himself. The first house in what is now St. Marys was built by Methodist missionaries in 1827. Reverend John Cook moved his family there from Illinois in 1828 after being ordained as a minister of the Methodist Church in that state. After five years spent preaching and founding schools and churches throughout Fulton County, Cook died suddenly on July 12, 1830 at age 49 while serving as pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Decatur Township near Savannah. Five days later, on July 15th, General James Kenedy arrived with 2,500 troops at Brunswick Landing to suppress a slave insurrection led by Caterer Hawkins and Elijah Hicks (son of white trader John Hicks). Cook's death created some controversy because he had been one of the few ministers willing to work with white settlers who were then living among Native Americans adjacent to what is now St. Marys Creek Landing on the Chattahoochee River where most slaves were bought and sold between 1785-1810 according to historian Sloan Stephens: "He had preached freedom day and night among these Indians; but when it became necessary for whites to live amongst them also they began[ed] to do away with all his preaching." As a result of Cook's death many friends and neighbors buried him without proper rites or services at their homes until 1840 when government forces burned down those structures along with many otherMethodist buildings during Indian Removal proceedings leading up to ceded land acquisition announced by President James Kenedy on May 8th, 1841 as part of Treaty Of Fort Snelling which ended Seminole Wars
In 1821, the town of St. Marys was founded by James A. Cook and his wife Rebecca on a tract of land that lay between the Chattahoochee River and US-17 about six miles east of what is now Augusta. The first permanent settler in the area was Captain John Armistead, who arrived in 1824 from Savannah, Georgia with his family. In 1830, local planters commissioned the construction of a mill on the Chattahoochee River to produce flour for export to England. By 1840, St. Marys had a population of 100 people and two stores. During Reconstruction (1868-1871), white supremacists attacked black citizens in St. Marys and other towns near Augusta, leaving many homes and businesses destroyed or looted.After Reconstruction ended, white farmers began arrive in large numbers in central Georgia and St. Marys lost its importance as an agricultural center; however, it continued to be occupied by African Americans until 1960 when they were finally allowed to leave without discrimination.
