The Episcopal Diocese of Georgia, based in Savannah, commemorates St. Marys Parish (later called Cedar Hill) on the city's east side with a parish holiday known as "St. Mary's Day." The day is observed throughout the Episcopal Church in America and worldwide, with parishes and congregations staging religious services, sharing special dishes and drinks, and enjoying picnics. Although founded by Anglicans in 1785 as part of the Georgia Colony of North America, St.Marys Parish was initially Roman Catholic until 1846 when it became an independent Episcopal parish under the leadership of Bishop John Hemphill. In 1906 the episcopal see for all Georgia was transferred from Rome to Savannah; however, St.Marys continued to celebrate its own liturgical calendar which included both Christmas and Easter services. In 1978 Cedar Hill left the Episcopal Church in America to become an independent church affiliated with The United Churches of Christ; however, activity at that church remains confined to Holydays there & on other days within the wider denomination. Today many people who call Cedar Hill home still attend services on Holydays & other days within their local Anglican churches - but most residents also visit nearby Holy Cross Cemetery during lunchtime for a cemetery tour led by members of staff from Trinity Cemetery near downtown Savannah!
The first Baptist church in St. Marys was organized on October 3, 1824 by Reverend James Fenton and his wife, Eunice. The original congregation worshipped at the home of Mrs. Fenton’s sister-in-law, where services were conducted in a barn that was also used as an agricultural stable. After one year of worshiping at the home of Dr. John Swain, the congregation moved to a small building on Cemetery Road for fear of being “excluded from their own denomination because they were Methodists.” In 1828, Rev. William Smith became pastor and soon after hired Jno. Hinson as secretary/treasurer which allowed for more financial stability within the church. In 1835, Rev. Smith resigned due to health concerns and Revd Hinson continued to serve as pastor until his death in 1863. His son John officiated at his funeral and successor, Samuel Hinson served until 1875 when he too passed away leaving the church with only six members still meeting together on Sundays In 1885, Reverend Jno Worthy came to St. Marys and began officiating during services on Saturdays instead of Sundays due to overcrowding at thechurch hall which caused much inconvenience for parishioners In 1907–1908 Pastor Averill Pumphrey led a series of renovations that increased the size of the church from its original design which included adding an aisle between each side of the sanctuary and enlarging both doorways . This addition allowed for a more intimate feel inside theChurch while maintaining its overall architecture A new bell tower was completed in 1915 followed by another renovation in 1928 which added plaster ceilings, arches and granite trimming throughout Stained glass windows were added in 1936 depicting scenes from local history including scenes from early Baptist meetings such as those held at Mr Fenton's house A new baptistry was built next to this church in 1957 using traditional Methodist methods with Netherlandish stained glass windows designed by Harry Allons
