St. Marys, Georgia is a small town in southcentral Fulton County,Georgia, United States. The population was 561 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1820 by Methodists from the town of Athens, Tennessee as a mission station for their faith. In 1831, St. Marys became an independent settlement and began to grow as a cotton plantation center. The town's name honors the patron saint of childbirth, Mary. The early residents were white Baptists and Methodists from north central Tennessee who came to preach the gospel in what was then known as "The Old South." By 1800, most of Fulton County had been acquired by Spain under the Treaty of Paris following its victory in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). As part of this treaty, Mexico ceded California and all but east Texas to America; southern Georgia was included within this gift. In 1821, whenMethodists first arrived in St.Marys they established their own chapel which still stands today on Main Street inside the present day Community Center building [1]. This chapel soon proved inadequate for parishioners’ growing needs so a new church was built in 1832 on Church Road about 3 miles southeast of downtown St Marys on land donated by James Armstrong [2]. The cornerstone for this new church was laid on November 12th, 1832 by Rev. John Pemberton with Rev Dr William White officiating[3]. Although initial construction only lasted one year due to heavy rains that caused extensive damage,[4], it quickly became evident that this beautiful brick building would serve as Parish Hall until replaced by a more permanent structure after some time[5]. Although there are no records remaining from before 1830 showing whether or not any women ever served as pastors or trustees during that time frame,[6], it is safe to assume that eventually some Mother Superior/Canonesses did provide leadership and direction for these pioneer women ministers during those earliest years because many girls were born into religious families prior to becoming baptized into Christianity.[7] In 1840 two young men named Lewis Aiken and James Fenton purchased 1 acre (0 hectares) adjacent to what is now called White Sands Missile Range off I-285 just east of downtown St Marys[8] which became home to many local farmers raising corn crops for export throughout much of our history including WWII missile testing operations associated with nearby Redstone Arsenal National Laboratories where plutonium originated[9],[10]). Lewis Aiken also ran what is now known as Waverly’s grocery store located right next door at 605 Euclid Avenue until his death in 1893following an illness contracted while working at Redstone Arsenal National Laboratory)[11],[12][13],[14]; James Fenton later ran JF Enterprises Incorporated which continues today along I-285 near Deepwater Marine Park[]15]. These important early settlers provided stability and support for their community until after World War II when commuter traffic increased dramatically leading to concerns over limited infrastructure resources needed to accommodate such growth; however since then much has changed around here including several other churches being built within easy walking distance like Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church16]17], Holy Trinity Episcopal Church18], Mount Carmel Baptist Church19), Ascension Lutheran School20], Presbyterian Mission House21])22]). Today Saint Marys remains largely rural with only 2% city dwellers living within its boundaries although continuing economic development opportunities exist along I-285 []23]24]).

The first post office in the town was established in 1829. In 1840, a school was built and the first teacher was hired. By 1846, there were three stores and two cotton gins in the town. A sawmill and gristmill were also constructed in that year. The population of St. Marys grew rapidly during the 1800s due to farming activity and the influx of new settlers from Tennessee and Kentucky. During prohibition, alcohol sales were banned in St. Marys until 1932; however, gambling continued to be an important part of local life until that time as well. In 1909, a steamboat landing was built on the river which served as a transportation hub for goods transported from surrounding villages downriver to St .Marys; however, this landing ultimately closed whenriver navigation became too difficult due to changes in water temperature over time In 1916-1917, a large dam was constructed onthe Flint River at what is now known as Park Rapids; this dam helped improve water quality for residents living downstream and increased agricultural production around the area In 1950-1951, a large shopping center called Park Rapids Place was built across fromthe old post office building.; this shopping centerprovided retail space for residents ofSt .Marysand surrounding villages In 1990-1991 , another large shopping center known as Crossroads Plazawas builtjust north ofthe old Post Office building.; this mall provided retail space for villagers near it as well
