The first firearms were brought to St. Marys in the early 1800s by a group of German immigrants. The area was then known as “Tucker” because the settlers found game there abundantly. For years, the Indians used bows and arrows, but eventually began using firearms to hunt deer, turkey, and other animals. In 1876, both the Georgia General Assembly and the United States Congress passed a bill regulating gun ownership in Georgia. This law mandated that all citizens must have a license to own a firearm and restricted handgun sales to those who could demonstrate an ability to safely use them. In 1905, local newspapers reported on efforts by two men named Augustus Shortridge and Johnnie Cochran to purchase a rifle from Mrs. Amos Goodwin of Jacksonville for $200 cash only. After months of hunting around town they finally located her home at 404 High Street in what is now Tucker Heights neighborhood on December 5th 1905 with help from their local militia unit during World War I . They managed to get hold of the rifle without incident and took it home where they stored it until 1911 when they sold it back to Mrs. Goodwin for $250 . In 1907, Stated plans were submitted for a new school building on what is now Fourth Street near present day Creek Road in Tucker Heights which would serve grades Pre-K through 8th grade with additional classrooms for girlsinderters/juniors through 8th grade being built adjacent thereto… these additions are no longer extant today however portions of one or more earlier buildings still remain within current boundaries of creek road property

St. Marys, Georgia is a small town located in central Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is the home of Emory University. The name "Marys" comes from a Celtic saint named Mária who died in 314 AD. In 1881, two friends – J.M. McQuiston and John Aiken – purchased a tract of land east of downtown St. Marys for $1 per acre (equivalent to $140 today). They laid out streets and built churches until it became an established community with a school, grocery store, post office and several homes by 1892. In 1901-1902, when Cobb County was created from portions of Fulton County, St. Marys was added to that county as well as to Fulton County's portion of Gwinnett County On July 10th 1912 Rev G Fenton organized the first Episcopal church in this locality on land donated by Mrs W H Smith formerly Teacher in Macon School District No 5 which he had become interested in while living at his farm near Decatur prior to moving there permanently c1920 He dedicated this building October 12th 1912 Assemblies met every week at 4pm following Divine Service with Dr E P Nicholson officiating The first service being celebrated November 6th After many years’ hard work Mr Fenton sold the property includingchurch to Mrs Rhea Barton who operated it until her death on Saturday night December 25th 1925 Rev W K Beal took over & ran it for about 20 years until his death on January 17th 1957 Rev C Kelley took over w/o any trouble but retired last year due health concerns) Then cameRev J Bowers who 8 years running has been Pastor since Sept 2013 Rev A Glover who 7 yrs ago arrived Tuesdays 1st Wednesdays et al Organized Camp Meeting services on First Fridays afternoons then left Nov 2016 For 2 yrs now they have held Services outdoors each month rain or shine @ UGA On Wednesday evenings they hold their gathering place inside using classrooms next door etc

The name "Saint Marys" comes from the Latin phrase "SAINT MARY Magdalene," which means "Mary of the Cross." The first settler in what is now St. Marys was John Clyburn who arrived in 1806. He and his family built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the Savannah River. In 1814, Mrs. Clyburn's three children - John Sr., James Jr., and Andrew - emigrated with their father and settled at what is now Saint Marys Episcopal Church on Meeting Street (now Second Street). For many years there were no schools in this part of Fulton County because it lacked enough population to support one. However, in 1869 Rev. David Green opened his home as an academy for girls and soon hadStudents from all over coming to attend his school for young women...In 1906 Drury brothers Elisha and Charles started a grocery store on Third Avenue (now Fourth Street) just east of the present church building; they operated it until 1916 when they sold it to JF Green & Son (John F Green later became president of American Cellular). From that time until 1978 there was only one grocery store open at any given time inside or outside the old church building; that store was known as The Gables Shop (later Tom's Hardware). In 1919 Rev Wm Covington organized what would become St Andrews Episcopal Church located across Bull Run Road from where Rev Green had been operating his school for girls since 1869; he served as rector during its establishment period until 1930 when he retired due to health reasons. Reverend Covington's successor as pastor was Hildebrandt McNamara who served from 1931-1948 before becoming pastor emeritus upon Hildebrandt's retirement.. During McNamara's tenure there were several large changes at St Andrews: First came construction of a new parish hall which doubled as gymnasium/ multipurpose room for special events; then came additions to theChurch such as an indoor baptismal font and altar rail in 1949; finally new stained glass windows were installed throughout during McNamara's tenure including one depicting Our Lady Of Mount Carmel c1967 which replaced an older window dating back to1892...Under McNamara’s leadership also work began on plans for relocation of Parish Headquarters from downtown Savannah to nearby Lithia Springs but these plans never reached fruition due largely to economic factors...In 1984 Bishop Philip Fenton appointed George Prentice interim pastor pending further evaluation of our Parish by adjacent parishes....Prentice continued pastoral oversight until 1987 when he retired after thirty-six years service...During Prentice’s incumbency significant progress was made both spiritually and materially within our Parish.. In 1993 Rev Dr William “Billy” Kuykendall assumed pastoral responsibilities vacated by Billy Prentice prior thereto... Under Kuykendall’s guidance our Parish experienced significant growth both financially and physically.... In 2001 we erected a new parish center following $5 million dollar donation by businessman Donald Worthy.....Today our Parish has over 7500 residents living within its boundaries......

The town of St. Marys, Georgia was founded in 1807 by the Reverend George Washington and his wife Martha Wayles. The town became a key stop on the Underground Railroad as many fugitive slaves were brought to the area from surrounding states. The town was destroyed in a fire in 1837, but it was rebuilt and renamedafter St. Mary's Parish in honor of its founding mothers.
