The parish has played an important role in Georgian Catholicism throughout its history and today remains dedicated to providing religious services and support for those who live in the area. In addition to its traditional activities such as liturgical singing and prayer, St. Mary’s also engages in outreach work through initiatives such as food pantry distributions and disaster relief efforts. St. Marys, Georgia is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 442 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become St. Marys was John Babcock who arrived in 1802. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. In 1807, Father James McCarthy built a monastery on an adjacent piece of land and named it after Our Lady of Sorrows in Rome, Italy due to the influx of refugees from Ireland during that time period (known as Great Famine). In 1819, Bishop George Washington consecrated Saint Anthony Of Padua Parish next door to Babcock's cabin with land given by Governor John Brownell for that purpose. In 1868, the area around St. Marys was designated as the site of an Agricultural Experiment Station, which helped to promote agricultural development in the area. In 1928, St. Marys was renamed for General James Fenton Kennedy after he served as president of the United States (1928-30).
