St. Marys, Georgia is a town located in Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States. It was founded in 1827 and named for the Virgin Mary. The population of St. Marys was 1,878 at the 2010 census. The town of St.Marys was founded on March 12th, 1827 by Reverend John Dyer as a part of a group of settlers who arrived from Virginia following the American Revolution. The townsite was located on an area that had been evangelized by Father James McGowan and his team of missionaries some years earlier. Reverend Dyer envisioned that the new community would serve as a haven for religious reformers who desired to put an end to corruption and hypocrisy among Georgian residents. He also hoped that this new village would provide support for Baptist missionary work in nearby counties such as Gwinnett and Clayton Counties which were then under British control. Initial development within the boundaries of what is now St.Marys took place largely through local purchase or donation with few outside assistance being provided during its early years due to concerns about flooding potential caused by heavy rains associated with the construction of creek beds adjacent to the original landowning families’ properties upstream from where today’s downtown sits – much later becoming known as “The Creek” district adjoining I-285/SR-1 (and before it SR-5). In fact, one historian has even suggested that some aspects of what we know today about early settlement at this site may be gleaned from aerial photography taken from higher altitudes during World War II when military bombers flew over rural areas near Atlanta en route to their targets in Northern Europe! One account suggests that Methodist preacher Drury Green purchased 2 acres northwest of present day downtown St.Marys around 1836; however another source claims he acquired just over 4 acres including what became today’s Riverwalk District only after purchasing adjoining land eastward along US 98A south of I-285/SR-1 (the modern day beltway), thus allying himself more closely with future cotton ginters and shoe manufacturers operating within easy reach both locally (northwest) and nationally via I-285/SR-1! By 1840 Rev John Pritchard had organized a small school which he called “Alcazar School” – a nameakes nod to Spanish missionsera Stations Dolores y San José de Alcazar located approximately 15 miles east southeast in Alpharetta County; very similar structures still stand today at Alvarado Street & Old College Road intersection across Frome Highway off SR 5 west Perimeter Rd.). As early as 1844 several persons had contacted Reverend Pritchard seeking passage westwards on slave ships bound for California but no vessel could be chartered until late December 1845 when USS Constitution under command by Commodore Matthew Perry came into Savannah Harbor carrying 376 Africans!!! Upon disembarking her passengers many white men eager for adventure set out on foot or horseback into uncharted territory while others boarded boats heading back home aboard Constitution; several African Americans did make it ashore though most likely due either direct coercion or opportunity seized upon by Captains Perry & Flag Officer Thomas Kidd who decided not pursue any further transportation opportunities available closer at hand!!! Many high quality photos survive showing whites huddled together around fireplaces inside warm barracks while Africans including children slept outdoors on dirt floors above infield stockyards where chickens & pigs were raised!!!! These days you can still see evidence left behind by past people living here including open fields surrounded by low brick walls built circa 1830!) Priorities evidently changed once General James Hogg arrived reinforcements August 14th 1861 following Confederate victory over Federal forces at First Bull Run!!!!! This event thrust America’s rapidly expanding southern states directly into conflict not just with each other but alsoring Englands fledgling Union government!!! A force numbering perhaps 30 plus militiamen advanced upon our unsuspecting locals numbering only 10! Providence Favored us nicely !! As events transpired Mr Hogg ordered his troops back inside camp prior to first light!!!!! We actually survived assault unlike so many others caught up between those two competing forces!!!!!!!!!! .....much later legislation passed authorizing removal of free blacks living within white limits herein!!!!! This宣言 led directly to numerous internal pell mell eruptions taking place throughout denominations acrossGeorgia leading ultimately to establishmentof neighboring Alabama as first Black state ever created!!!!!!!!!! ....... eventually educationally black Georgians began moving northward away from racial intolerance developing famous colleges like Tuskegee University (& Emory University)....... Today there are more than 350 residents living withinthe boundariesofStmarysisGwinnettCountyGa In 1796 Major George Rogers donated 8 acres comprising present day Riverwalk District northeast corner SR 5 & Old College Road opposite Frome Highway off SR 5 southwest perimeters boundary Rd.) adjacent creek bed used for grinding corn miller William Butts operation which functioned intermittently until 1830!). It is interesting noting that although most current businesses locate close to each other geographically speaking they nevertheless maintain separate mailing lists (& Facebook pages) primarily because their founders graciously allowed business rivalry Within their respective communities rather than attempting unilaterally invading one another's turf!!!!!!!! What we have today constitutes quite an impressive mixture indeed if you ask me!!!! However despite its physical proximity Riverwalk District continues To enjoyrelative isolation given its distance from major intersections such as I-285/SR-1 etc......... ....... currently significant presence existswithinstmarysisgwinnettcountygainternet
The first European to explore and settle in St. Marys was a French Jesuit, Father Jacques Marquette, in 1795. He mapped out the area that would become St. Marys County in 1802 and named it for the Virgin of the Cross, who had been martyred there more than a century before. The population of St. Marys County was only 10 people in 1802, but by 1830 it had grown to over 1,000 people. The town of Saint Marys grew up around the courthouse and jail which were built in 1824-27 by Colonel James Milledge and his son John Crampton Milledge. After Georgia became a state in 1899, Saint Marys began to grow rapidly as businesses moved into the town from outside Georgia or from neighboring Alabama or Mississippi. In 1907, local citizens voted to name their town after General William Troup who had fought at Altona during the Creek War (1835-36).
