In 1845-46, Confederate soldiers burned down several buildings in downtown St. Marys while raiding local stores during their march across Georgia towards Mobile Bay (now Mobile), Alabama pursuant to orders from General Robert Eickhoff commanding all Union forces along the Gulf Coast under General Sherman’s direction “to reduce all possible obstacles between us and Richmond”1 . This event has been memorialized annually by a small parade through downtown streets conjured up specifically for this purpose each year on April 15th called “The Robert Eickhoff Parade” conducted by appropriately-clad individuals wearing Confederate uniformsemonstrating once again how easily commerce could be destroyed without consequence being felt anywhere near population centers like Atlanta or Savannah2 In 1865 when Appomattox Court House fell to Confederate troops under General Nathan Bedford Forrest they burned most everything within sight including Baptist churches and schools located throughout central Georgiansville3 although some escaped unharmed into neighboring counties4 later that same year Abraham Lincoln was assassinated here5 resulting in widespread panic throughout much of southern America as news spread about one man’s death more than three score miles away6 leaving behind a permanently abandoned city6 though occasional visitors continue to investigate oddities found scattered throughout this once thriving community today7
