St. Marys is a town in St. Johns County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta-Fulton metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now St. Marys was John Painter in 1792. From 1802 to 1814, the community was known as rifle Enterprise due to its location near an arsenal and fortification complex on the edge of Georgianshire County that was used by the United States Army during the War of 1812 and later by General Andrew Jackson's army during the Mexican–American War. In 1825, Rev. George White founded a mission church in what is now St Marys after spending several years traveling through central Georgia preaching Christianity to Native Americans and urging them to convert to Christianity or face extinction. The first service took place December 3, 1825 (the day before Christmas) under instruction from White himself and twelve male missionaries from his congregation who had accompanied him on his trip north from Mobile Bay Alabama.. In 1830, white farmer David Ball built a cabin on a hill overlooking present-day StMarys for himself and his wife Sarah Jane Ball; it remained their home until 1840 when they sold it to Majestic Tavern owner Ebenezer Postell for $20 (). He renamed it "Ball's Cabin" after Sarah Jane's father who had been pastor at nearby Metropolis Baptist Church for many years prior thereto (). On October 15, 1860, Union soldiers burned down post office building #5 in present day StMarys while supplies were being transported into Confederate forces besieging Fort Sumter in South Carolina; this event also destroyed much of downtown Saint Marys which would not be rebuilt until many decades later when railroads came through town again). "Old Saint Marys," as most of downtown Saint Marys had come to be called since 1861 due to Reconstruction efforts led by Mayor James Hines (1822-1910), has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978 (). During World War II local production helped support American war efforts with materials such as munitions manufacturers JB Hunt & Sons Paper Company Limited located just east of town along US 41A south of I-285W; Hunt Paper Products Co., Ltd., still exists today as one of metro Atlanta’s largest privately held businesses having multiple locations throughout metro Atlanta including one within walking distance of current mayor Kasim Reed’s precinct house headquarters.). When America entered World War II defense plants like Hunt Paper Products were among those closed but reopened soon afterward thanks largely to Marietta company president Floyd Ismay who also happened to live across street from plant making possible resumed production despite numerous disruptions caused by Japanese incendiary bombing raids against southern Atlantans beginning early 1942 which destroyed major portions (> 90% destruction)of Marietta’S industrial infrastructure – effects still linger today seen even in recent reconnections between neighborhoods adjacent suburbs close by along I-285W Leesburg Pike). Today Old Saint Marys stands once again as one OF MARIETTA’S SUSPENSEFUL LAST STANDING BUSINESSES STRUCK BY THE WAREHOUSES COLLAPSE."
The first settlement in St. Marys, Georgia was established by the European Americans in 1820. The town was named for the Virgin Mary, and it became a center of German culture. In 1851, the town was renamed after General James Wharton, who served as governor of Georgia during the 1850s. In 1865, St.Marys became a part of South Carolina and was renamed Myrtle Beach.
