Snellville is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 8,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is the county seat of Fulton County. The first white settler in Snellville was James Burch, who founded what is now called Burch's Ferry on the Chattahoochee River in 1785. In 1812, Snellville was established as a station on the Alabama Railroad and became a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1868, Snellville became an incorporated town when it was annexed byAtlanta. In 1907, John Denton erected a dam across the Chattahoochee River to create Lake Lanier. President Franklin D. In 1941, Snellville was among more than 100 communities affected by World War II whenbombing raids destroyed most of downtown Atlanta; many residents fled to rural areas for safety. One resident described how they "lived off us[ing] whatever we could find: boiled chicken necks from our grocery store yards", referring to their subsistence hunting and fishing practices during wartime days In 1951, Gaetano Pavone opened his appetizing pizzeria located at 6th Street Northeast inside what are now known as The Coca-Cola Company headquarters complex; following Pavone's lead (and later that year), several other businesses followed suit throughout metro Atlanta., establishing what has come to be known as "Pavone's Pizza". This period saw rapid growth for Snellingvilie with new businesses opening up all around town including two hospitals (the University of Medicine & Dentistry of Atlanta Medical Center and Georgia State University Hospital) as well as several shopping malls such as The Grove Shopping Centre ().
