A Methodist church burned down on December 12, 1861; however, local citizens rebuilt it within two weeks using local materials and labor using funds raised from a public auction of goods seized from Confederate troops during the war effort. In 1865 Union General Andrew Johnson decided that Atlanta should be occupied as he believed that it would be less obstacle between Confederate General Robert Epperson's army besieging Vicksburg ( southern Mississippi) and Union lines at Richmond Virginia which controlled eastern Tennessee and northern Alabama
