Snellville is a small town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name Snellville derives from Andrew Mellon's father-in-law, General James Snell. The first enslaved people to be brought overland to this area were slaves owned by Captain John Smith and his son Captain William Smith in 1795. By 1800, there were 10 white men working as sharecroppers on the main road between Savannah and Decatur. In 1802, General James Snell purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land west of present-day Snellville from two brothers who had run it into bankruptcy. He named the tract "Mallard" after his father-in-law and laid out a small village called "Newhall" around it on December 12, 1802. In 1815, General James Snelling erected a large log cabin near what is now downtown Snellville for himself and his family as their winter home while he campaigned against Native Americans living in that region during the Creek War of 1806-1813. Afterward he made occasional visits to Newhall until 1830 when he moved permanently to Philadelphia where he became one of America's wealthiest citizens primarily through his ownership of several banks and other businesses including shipbuilding companies and real estate holdings in Pennsylvania and Delaware. On October 3, 1830, Andrew Mellon received an appointment from President Jackson as Secretary of Treasury which led to Mellon becoming one of America's richest men also through investments in railroads throughout North America with interests centered in Buffalo Bayou Company (later Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway), Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (later Penn Central Railroad), Erie Canal System (now Erie Canal Corporation),and Baltimore & Ohio RR&E powerhouse known as Harriman Blockade Co.). In 1835 Mellon left Philadelphia for good but continued to invest heavily in railroad stocks all across North America until his death some 27 years later at age 80%. His widow died three years later at age 82 leaving their fortunebehindto be divided equally among their five children: Anna Louise Mellon Scudder; Elliott Monahan; Philip Monahan; Franklin Woolridge Scudder; and Eleanor Roosevelt Scudder). Prior to her death she accomplished further charitable work within her husband's philanthropic empire such as establishing The Andrew Mcclellan Foundation which supports education for underprivileged children throughout the Americas coupled with support for environmental causes such as fightingacid rain].

The economy of Snellville is primarily based on its agricultural industry, which provides jobs for locals and exports to other countries.
In 1807, the town of Snellville was founded by James and Sally Snell. It grew rapidly as a result of its location on the route between Atlanta and Savannah. The first school in Snellville was built in 1809, and soon there were several businesses in the town. In 1811, Captain James Fenton purchased land adjacent to Snellville from the original owners for $800. This area became known as Fenton's Landing. In 1815, Johnnie Cochran set up shop here and started selling chewing tobacco. By 1830, there were 20 businesses in Snellville with a population of over 1,000 people. In 1840, two brothers named Alexander and George Washington bought lots near the courthouse for $2 per acre to build a home. They called their house "The White House". The development around The White House continued until 1861 when Confederate General Robert Ewell's army burned it down while he was besieging Atlanta.
