Snellville, Georgia is a small town located in the central part of Snellville County on the Chattahoochee River. On July 3, 1836, it became the first incorporated community in Snellville County. It was named for General James Troup and his family who had settled there in 1821. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its convenient transportation links. By 1840, Snellville had a population of 1,500 people and was home to four churches. Businesses led by merchants developed around the lumberyards and mills that were built along the river. In 1849, Snellville acquired title to what is now known as Independence Park from John Fenton Cooke. This allowed for growth in recreational activities such as swimming, baseball, football and skating which helped contribute to its success over time. Over the years, various businesses have been located in Snellville including a restaurant called Big Apple (now gone), a chemical plant, a bank, and an airport. Today, Snellville is a vibrant community with many cultural attractions such as arts festivals and music festivals. It is also home to several high schools which provide opportunities for students to learn about different cultures and languages.

By 1830, Snellville had enough residents to begin voting on their own government. In 1851, when Alabama gained independence from the United States, Snellville voted against secession because it felt that southern states were underrepresented in the new country. After Alabama's secession from the Union,Snellville declared itself an independent city and continued growing rapidly as a cultural center for southeastern Georgia. In 1957, during the height of segregation in America, Snellville integrated its schools with other black cities across America throughOperation joint project/ integration/ county fair integration which took place at several local high schools across western Atlanta County
The first European to visit Snellville was a French fur trader, Jacques Marquette in 1684. The town was founded by Colonel James Robertson in 1793 and named for General John Sevier Snell, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1802, the town became one of the original thirteen counties of Georgia. It was annexed by Atlanta in 1898 and then by Alabama in 1901.
