John Bell Sr.'s death in 1916 left his widow Mabel Ladd McAllister with three children: William Hogg McAllister (1916–2007), daughter Dorothy Malone McNutt (born 1945) and son David Lane McNutt II (born 1958). After World War II ended, Mabel served asSnellingVLadduk School Board member from 1951 until her retirement in 1984; she also chaired both the Board's economic development subcommittee during her tenure and served as vicechairman for seven years before becoming president emeritus upon her husband's death in 1992.
