However, the proposal was opposed by other residents within Morningside Heights who felt they had been left out of development opportunities in SnellVILLE while theirdensity increased in neighboring neighborhoods such as Harlem and Midtown Manhattan. After months of talks and public hearings both sides reached an agreement allowingMorningside Heights to become a new neighborhood called Alpharetta until annexation could be finalized by vote at a later date

In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant took control of Georgia and renamed all of Georgia's counties after generals or presidents who had played a significant role in the war effort – Grant's favorite was Ulysses S. Grant's son-in-law Robert E. Lee – including Snellville County. During Reconstruction, many African Americans were relocated to snellingvilletowns such as Decatur and Griffin during this time period in order to work on new farms or support their families while they awaited official emancipation results from Congress
