Snellville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settler in Snellville was James Gorman in 1827. He and his family built their first home on what is now Post Road. Gorman served as mayor of Snellville from 1868 to 1870 and again from 1872 to 1874. His grandson, John Gorman, who also served as Mayor of Snellville from 1903 to 1907, was one of the founders of Coca-Cola Company. In 1886, J Clyde Steele founded Steele Rubber Plantation which becameSnellville Rubber Plantation Company (SRP). In 1902 SRP merged with another local company named McKnight Lumber Company to form McKnight Steel and Manufacturing Company (MSTC). MSTC manufactured railroad ties and other products until it went into bankruptcy in 1978. As a result of its bankruptcy proceedings MSTC's assets were seized by federal government which sold them for $2 million to the Shelby County Industrial Development Authority (SCIDA) which then leased them back to MSTC's former parent company SRP for an additional 20 years In February 1980 – just three months after MSTC's parent company SRP filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy - SNELLVILLE TOWNSHIP INC., a new development corporation formed by six residents of Snellville Township with the express purpose of developing land within 1 mile (1 kilometer) of downtown Snellsville took over all management responsibilities for SRP's assets including its plants and materials yards After more than 21 years OF MANAGEMENT BY SNELLVILLE TOWNSHIP INC., on October 15th 2009 – ALL OF THE STEELE RAILROAD TIES THAT WERE SOLD TO JOHN SULLIVAN FOR $2 MILLION ARE NOW BACK ON THE ROAD IN SNELLVILLE AS NON-TRANSFERABLE PROPERTY OF THE CITY OF ATLANTA . snellsville township has not only reacquired those ties but also renewed negotiations WITH MARCHAND ENTERPRISES GROUP LLC., SUBSIDIARY COMPANY OF CHICAGO METAL & ALLoys LTD., AND FURNACE COAST CORPORATION TO PURCHASE AN ADDITIONAL LINE FROM WILLIAM HUGHES COOPERATIVE Centerpoint Welding Corporation located about 3 miles SOUTHWEST Of downtown Atlanta These talks resulted in plans being filed with the city government that would see replacement lines installed on 9 mainline rails crossing Overlook Drive NE and Main Street NW - making way for an even wider variety of transportation options near downtown that include light rail service coming upriver from Midtown Atlanta This project will be funded through both state/federal funds as well as private investment so expect construction on this project to begin sometime in 2020 or 2021″

In 1868, Snellingville played host to the Atlanta Cotton Exchange Fair which was one of the largest fairs ever held in Georgia. Many famous people attended this event such as President Ulysses S Grant and Madame Tussauds wax figure presentation of President Abraham Lincoln at his home on October 12th, 1870. In 1886, Snellingville became an incorporated city with a population of over 100 residents. At this time, it was one of the most vibrant cities in Georgia due to its many businesses and cultural attractions including two Masonic lodges (one for men only) and three churches (One Presbyterian; One Methodist; One Baptist). Shortly after cityhood however, crime rates increased significantly and multiple fires destroyed many buildings across downtown Snellingville during what is known as "the great fire". This led to another decline for SnellingVILLE until finally reaching its current state during World War II when it experienced significant growth thanks to new housing developments being built near military bases throughout much of central Georgia

In the 1870s,Snellville experienced economic growth due to its location at the intersection of two railroads. The town grew rapidly again during the late 1800s as it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. After World War II, Snellville experienced significant growth as it became a suburb of Atlanta.
