In 1865, Snellville became the temporary capital of Georgia after Atlanta was damaged by Sherman’s army during the Siege of Atlanta. The Gunsmith Shop on Main Street was built in 1865 as part of Reconstruction efforts inGeorgia following the war. It continued to be used until 1971 when it closed down due to concerns about vandalism and lack of maintenance. After closure, the building was used as a storage shed until it was purchased and preserved by the local community group in 1978. Today, it houses a number of local history museums including The History Museum of Cobb County and The History Museum of Georgia which are open every day from 9am to 4pm.
