Snellville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Snell in 1821 as a small hamlet on the Chattahoochee River. In 1825, Snellville became an incorporated community and then a city in 1830. The city annexed other smaller towns until it had a total population of 11,564 people in 1960. Named after General James Snell (1785-1854),Snellville's first Mayor and founder of the City Council who served from 1830 to 1840, the namesake street in Snellingtowne Avenue runs through downtown serving as a historical marker for both cities. The current mayor is Burt Ward and he has been since January 1st, 2019. According to the 2000 census there were 3,711 people living in Snellville full-time; however this figure may have decreased due to factors such as joblessness or relocating out during economic times like recessionary times which tend to reduce home ownership rates within certain areas within America due less jobs available for owners/workers to commute into their homes...snellingtowne avenue between cobb st & union sq has become one of my favorite places to walk because it's so quiet without all those cars going past” – Barbara Whitehead

The Snellville, Georgia area has been inhabited for over a millennium. The first Europeans to visit the area were the French who came in 1763. They named the area Nouvelle-Angoulême after Philippe de Nemours, Duc de Montauban. The area was first settled by Native Americans and then by African Americans. The first black person to live in Snellville was Otha Bumpus who arrived in 1813. He worked as a servant for white people. In 1820, Dr. James Aiken bought land in what is now Snellville from the Cherokee Nation. He built a home and named it Aiken House after himself and his son John Aiken Sr.. In 1830, Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased 640 acres of land east of present day Snellville from Dr. Aiken. He renamed it Forrest Plantation and developed it into one of the largest cotton plantations in Georgia at the time. By 1840, Forrest had acquired 1,500 acres of land which he called "Forsyth County". 1) In 1825 Isaac Allred platted what is now downtown Snellville on land that he had purchased from Lt Col Nathan Bedford Forrest (later General William Troup). 2) Allred's plat included a large courthouse which still stands today - tall and proud against the surrounding mountainside! 3) It wasn't long before trade began flowing through what is now downtown Snellville - bringing goods such as foodstuffs, weapons, slaves and other items necessary for life on plantation living across these many hills! 4) By 1830 most of downtown was destroyed by fire but mercifully not all - some buildings have survived to stand today! 5) Most notably Allred's courthouse still stands today despite being damaged multiple times throughout its history... 6) Today you can find both indoor/outdoor exhibits about Isaac Allred at Forsyth County Courthouse Museum & Park!
In 1822, Snellville was founded by Captain John Snell and his brother-in-law, Isaac Smith. The town grew quickly due to the natural resources it had access to such as coal and timber. In 1839, Snellville became a city and was renamed in honor of George Washington Snell. The population of Snellville reached 10,000 by 1850. The first cotton gin in Georgia was built inSnellville in 1849. By 1865, there were over a dozen cotton gins in Georgia. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), much of the Confederate supply network for soldiers came through Snellville. Many stores and businesses closed their doors during the conflict because of lack of supplies or support from local governments. After the war, many people returned toSnallville and began rebuilding their homes and businesses. In 1870, Mayor James Fenton erected a large wooden schoolhouse that served as the town's first public library until it burned down in 1901.
