Smyrna, Georgia is a small town located in Cobb County, Georgia. Smyrna was founded on December 1, 1801 by the brothers James and Joseph Smyrna. The town was named for the ancient city of Myrrha in Thrace, Greece. It became a consolidated municipality on November 3, 1907. Smyrna has a population of approximately 508 residents as of the 2010 census. The first settlers to Smyrna were James and Joseph Smyrna who arrived on December 1, 1801 from Athens, Georgia with their family. They built the first house in what is now downtown Smyrna. The brothers also started a blacksmith shop and operated it until about 1830 when they sold it to John Burchardt who ran it until his death in 1840. In 1850 there were only 10 residents living in Smyrna while by 1870 there were over 100 people living in the town. In 1907, Smyrna merged with neighboring Decatur to form a new consolidated municipality called Decatur-Smyrnia which had an area of 5 square miles including all of Cobb County except for unincorporated areas such as Canton and Dunwoody that are part of Atlanta metropolitan area. During World War I (1914-18), Smyrna served as an artillery ammunition depot at Camp Butler National Military Park near Duluth, Minnesota due to its close proximity to enemy lines of communication and its ability to ship munitions directly into war theaters without having to go through main roads or railroads]. After the war ended, most military veterans left town but some families continued living there until after the closure of Camp Butler National Military Park in 1948 which removed all traces of military personnel from towns across America.]
