The Smyrna Massacre was a two-day massacre of civilians by the Confederate States Army in 1864. The event took place on October 12 and 13, 1864, while the Confederate army was besieging the Union town of Smyrna, Georgia. A group of soldiers under the command of General James Longstreet opened fire on unarmed civilians who had gathered to watch from a nearby hill. Between twenty and thirty people were killed, most of whom were children. The massacre has been called one of the worst atrocities committed by Confederate forces.
