Smyrna is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. Smyrna was founded in 1819 by General James Wilkinson and his family. The community was named for the Smyrnaean Battle of 1779, which helped end the American Revolution. The population of Smyrna was 706 when it incorporated as a city in 1907. In 1950, Smyrna became the seat of government for Fulton County after it was made an official county seat by state law. The city has since lost its status as a municipality and is now part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The history of Smyrna can be traced back to 1819 when General James Wilkinson settled in what is now parts of Fulton County with his wife and two children. He had come overland from North Carolina on horseback and wagon to help lead the effort against independence from Great Britain. General Wilkinson's son-in-law, Nathan Bedford Forrest, played an important role in organizing the resistance movement in Georgia and southeastern Tennessee during the early 1800s. When hostilities ended at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865, Nathan Bedford Forrest personally escorted those who had not surrendered back to slavery into Confederate territory where they were put into concentration camps until their release under President Abraham Lincoln's executive order known as "the President's proclamation." As a result of this event known as "the bloodiest battle ever fought on American soil," General Wilkinson received criticism from many throughout America for supporting slavery while living within our borders. In 1907, Smyrna adopted an ordinance designating May 1st as City Day in honor of Mayor Hodge Auld who had championed cityhood for Smyrna despite vehement opposition from some quarters within the community due to its racial makeup at that time (i.e., primarily African Americans). On December 12th, 1957 – just one year after becoming an official city – Mayor Hodge Auld passed away suddenly at age 63 following long health complications resulting from multiple sclerosis; he was famous locally for his public service contributions including founding both the first ambulance service in Atlanta and leading efforts to improve street lighting throughout downtown Syrynah post-Katrina damage [1]. That same year also saw another milestone for Smyrna when it became one of only two cities (the other being Peachtree City) across Georgia to be granted water rights pursuant to Section 521(a)of the Public Health Service Act (42 USC 321 et seq.). These new rights allowed Smyrnians access not onlyto piped water but also sewerage services which they previously could not have afforded without prior application or special permits - something that continues to this day! Mayor Hodge Auld leaves behind several notable accomplishments including: designation as “city founder” by Turner Museum Executive Director Driscoll & Pugh; erection/ Dedication Of First Street Bridge In Memory Of Mrs Hodge Auld On March 2nd 1959; designation By Secretary Of State As One Of Georgia’s 50 Smartest Cities In 1990

In 1845-1846, Smyrna experienced a series of devastating fires that destroyed many businesses and homes. The fire also killed several people and injured many more. After the fire, Smyrna began to experience rapid growth and development as a result of its new infrastructure and economic opportunities. In 1865, Smyrna became an incorporated city under the jurisdiction of Atlanta metropolitan area. It has since undergone numerous changes both physical and social during its history; however, it remains one of the most important cities in Fulton County today.
