Smyrna is a small town in southwestern Georgia. It was founded by white settlers in 1821, and its population was 1,257 as of the 2010 census. The town is located on the Chattahoochee River, about 15 miles west of Decatur. Smyrna has a total area of 4square miles (10 km²). The first permanent settler in Smyrna was Captain John Cowan, who arrived in 1821. The townspeople were farmers and traders until around 1830, when they began to build up their own businesses. In 1836, Smyrna became the seat of government for what is now Gwinnett County. In 1870, Smyrna became a part of the newly formed Atlanta metropolitan area. In 1980 it became an independent city once again. During World War II, Smyrna served as a military base for the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force based at Roswell Field outside Albuquerque, New Mexico; airfields such as Hawkinsville and Love Field were used here including Constitutionell Field which later became secondary airport renamed Dowling Airport after General James Wolkowicz who commanded Allied forces during World War II there; and Elmira Municipal Airport which served both civilian and military purposes until it closed in 1975 due to budget cuts by then- Mayor Donny Hathaway. As part of post-war demobilization efforts, many people from Smyrna left Georgia for other parts of the United States or Canada while their houses burned down; this exodus helped lay the foundation for what would become known as "The Gullah Town Movement" within America's African American community following the war years.. Today much of what once constituted downtown Smyrna has been replaced by new housing developments: Northside Village (@NortheastVillage), Southside Village (@South SideVillage), Allendale @AllendaleHomes/AllendaleAquariums & Creekview Towers (@CreekviewTowers) & Park Hill @ParkHill Homes/Airport Landing (@Airport Landing). With over $1Billion invested into real estate development since 2000 alone[2], much work still remains to be done - including comprehensive master planning - but things are looking up for downtown Smyrna!

Smyrna was founded on July 4, 1784 by James Smyrna and his brother David. The Smyrnas were the first white settlers in what is now Georgia. The Smyrnas began trading with the Cherokee Nation and built a homesite on the Chota River. In 1815, they leased land from the Cherokee Nation for development into a town. On December 15, 1822, Smyrna was chartered as an independent city by Governor John Clements Wilson.
