Savannah, Georgia is a town in the U.S. state of Georgia that is located on the Savannah River and within Chatham County. As of the 2010 census, Savannah had a population of 97,754. The first European settlers in what is now Savannah were Frenchmen who arrived in 1608 as part of a larger expedition to find a new location for France on the American mainland after its successful colonization of Canada. The French built Fort Duquesne near present-day downtown Savannah and named it after their patron saint, François Duquesne, who had been martyred by Spanish Catholics in Mexico City three years earlier. In 1733, British General James Oglethorpe founded Augusta upon the peninsula which he called New Orleans because he wanted to distance England from Spanish power at this time during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). After France's defeat at Quebec in 1759, Spain took over Louisiana from France and began to develop it as its own colony with underdeveloped infrastructure—a situation that suited Spanish nobleman Miguel de la Hoya well because he could control much of what was south of Havana Bay. TheDe La Hoya heirs sold their interest in Louisiana to English entrepreneurs in 1803 and turned it into an outpost on Stono Island where they built Fort Moultrie (later known as Savannah) using localedarwood trees for shipbuilding timber rather than importing expensive imports from Europe. By 1825 there were 2200 people living mostly aboard ships moored along the river mouth; over half the residents worked aboard shipyards or farms raising cattle, sheep or pigs on land leased from landowners west of town. By 1850 only 150 people lived in town proper while 3000 worked ashore; by 1920 all but 25% of residents were employed ashore while 75% resided within five miles (10 km) of town limits outside any agricultural production except saltmaking which occurred mainly along Lake Miccosukee several miles north shoreline). Many businesses closed during Prohibition (1920-1932), including most dockyards; however some reopened during World War II when shortages produced by both war effort and post-war rationing led to increased maritime activity upstream along both riverside channelside developments such as chemical plants,, textile mills,, lumber yards,, paper products manufacturing plants., pipe plant., cotton gin., shoe store.,and many other small businesses associated with transportation/commerce/laborintensive industries characteristic not onlyof early 20th century America but alsoof modern day Appalachia
