As a result of this order some 1 million African Americans (of whom about one-third were enslaved) left their plantations for northern cities such as New York City or Philadelphia duringJackson’s presidency However even with all these issues surrounding him life continued relatively normal for those living in what would become known as Old South Georgia until well into the antebellum period when social unrest often led to violence In 1861 following Confederate capture of Fort Pulaski outside Charleston Harbor things changed rapidly for many residents of EastGeorgia when Confederates began ordering goods brought upriver from Charleston port carried inland instead mail boats called “ CSS Sumter” carrying military supplies bound for Richmond rather than being sent downriver like regular cargo
