The Savannah area has been inhabited by the native nations of Georgia for over 4,000 years. The first European to arrive in what is now Savannah was a French trader named Jacques Marquette in 1741. A year later, the British landed on land that would become Savannah and began trading with the Native Americans. In 1802, General James Wilkinson founded an army at Fort Moultrie and march into what is now downtown Savannah. After successfully repelling several Indian attacks, Wilkinson named his new settlement after himself, Savannah Creek. Savannah became a city in 1835 when it was selected as the site for the capital of Georgia. The city quickly grew and prospered under its new name and flag. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Savannah was one of five Confederate capitals from Georgia (the others were Atlanta, Augusta, Macon Junction, and Selma). However, following Union victory at Gettysburg in 1863, Savannah slowly regained its independence until World War II when it finally rejoined Georgia as a republic. Today’s Savannah is one of the most vibrant cities on the Southeast Coast of America and home to some of the most impressive architecture and history in all of Georgia.
