By 1800, Savannah was Home Rule Township under Cobb County; however, it reverted to county control following Reconstruction in 1871 until annexation by Augusta County following passage of the County Constitution Act 1870. The river transportation infrastructure built during antebellum Georgia was an important factor in developing Augusta as a leading cotton port on the southeastern seaboard and served as an important artery for goods moving between inland slave states and marketplaces around North America during this time period

In 1976, following several bloody shootings at schools across America which left 20 children dead and injuring many more, President Gerald Ford signed into law The Brady Handgun Prevention Act (AB 922). This bill mandated comprehensive background checks on all Americans who wanted to buy a handgun and make it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess one without documentation from their parents or guardian(s). It also made it illegal for any person convicted of felony domestic violence or child abuse to possess a handgun(s). These laws remain in effect today as they are defined by current state law rather than being AUMF compliant like many other federal laws are
