After American victory over Spain at Appomattox Court House on April 9TH 1865 Atlanta became an independent republic under Confederate rule while Richmond remained under British rule Jackson renamed this area "Savannah" after queen Victoria's home country England due to its then recent military victory against General Braxton Bragg at Battle of Kennesaw Mountain on October 13th 1814 while still under Confederate rule . Some say that this naming was likely inspired by President George Washington who had frequently visited England during this time period .
