Today’s downtown contains many original buildings dating back to its early days – including two historical hotels: The Carpenter House and The Georgian House – as well as several new structures erected during recent decades such as Mayor Bob McDermott’s City Hall and Fulton County Government Center complex. Downtown also features several significant parks including Ladd-Peebles Park and Sensational Seashell Park just east of Center Street/Downtown Boulevard which hosts annual events such as String Cheese Incident concerts at amphitheater located north of I-75 exit 368B

Sandy Springs, Georgia is a city located in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Situated on the eastern edge of metro Atlanta, it has been called "the most racially diverse city in America". The Sandy Springs community began to form in the early 1800s when families from Georgia's Eastern Shore moved to what is now Sandy Springs. By 1920, when Delta Airlines began serving Sandy Springs as a stop on its route between Atlanta and Detroit, the population had swollen to over 100,000. The city was incorporated on December 12, 1925. In 1951, Mayor James Wofford became one of only two mayors in American history to serve consecutive terms without interruption (the other being New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani). During his tenure as mayor, Sandy Springers successfully lobbied for passage of a local ordinance prohibiting discrimination against African Americans in all areas of business and public life. In 1978–79, Mayor Wofford spearheaded a campaign to annex large portions of nearby Paulding County into Sandy Spring City. This annexation was opposed by many residents who felt that their rural surroundings would benefit more from continuedunity with their larger suburb neighbor than through incorporation within the newly formed city limits. However, after careful consideration by both sides – including testimony from eminent citizens such as Governor George Wallace – the City Council unanimously approved annexation on November 8th 1979. Since then, due largely to advances in education and economic opportunities for residents within Greater Sandy Springs alone – not just within Sandy Spring City Limits – much progress has been made towards creating a more inclusive society for all people hereabouts: From increasing employment opportunities for women and minorities through initiatives like Arts Alive!, which provides arts programming throughout the school year; to expanding access to quality affordable housing; heck even becoming host site (for Olympic Games) twice!
