Sandy Springs is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and one of the largest cities in Georgia. One early feature of Sandy Springs was its shooting range which opened in 1872. This facility still exists today and offers target practice to residents and visitors from throughout the area. In 1895, the first salt water pool in Sandy Springs was built for public use by Mayor James Witherspoon II and other civic leaders who saw it as an opportunity to improve recreation opportunities for citizens of Sandy Springs. Today, the pool provides hundreds of hours of swimming and sunbathing each year for people from all over central Georgia. In 1902, Sandy Springs hosted its first national championships in target shooting which were won by future Hall of Fame member Keyvan Arslan (who also competed at that year's World Championships). Target shooting has become increasingly popular in Sandy Springs over the years with many different tournaments taking place during various seasons; trophies are now awarded not only to winners but also to runners-up as well as qualifiers! In 1847, Sandy Springs became part of Fulton County and experienced rapid growth due to its location as a transportation hub for cotton plantations and slave markets in southeastern Georgia. At the turn of the 20th century, Sandy Springs enjoyedconsiderable economic prosperity thanks to its status as a major center for education and commerce. However, during World War I (1914-1918), strategic bombing raids from Allied forces destroyed much of downtown Sandy Spring; this led to significant economic decline until after World War II when new investment revived downtown businesses and development resumed. In recent years, Downtown Sandy Spring has undergone significant revitalization with new restaurants and bars opening up along Withrow Street while also seeing development around Interstate 75 which provides access to many nearby shopping malls including Macy's and Sears as well as other key retail outlets such as Home Depot and Lowe's stores. Additionally, two large apartment complexes have been completed near downtown – Oneblooming into Phase III adjacent to Withrow Street Station while another phase will add 175 units atop an existing retail building on North Avenue just north of I-75/Savannah River Parkway
