The Sandy Springs metropolitan area had a population of 85,951 as of July 1, 2016. The municipality was established on March 4, 1884 by an act of the Georgia General Assembly under the name "Atlanta". On October 15, 1886 it changed its name to Sandy Springs after Robert H. Spring (1801-1887), a textile manufacturer and philanthropist who donated land for the city's initial development. In 1909 Sandy Springs became home to Atlanta's first high school and founded Summerhill Baptist Church on what is now Spring Street. In 1926 Sandy Springs was merged with neighboring Peachtree City to form a new city government which grew rapidly until World War II when it contracted out most services such as policing and firefighting to other jurisdictions due to scarce financial resources. Afterward, Sandy Springs experienced rapid growth as an economic center within Fulton County through innovative programming designed to attract businesses and jobs; including several downtown redevelopment projects that increased access to urban living spaces for residents and brought about demographic change throughout the community periphery. Continued economic growth enabled Sandy Springs to become one of America's fastest-growing cities by 2020 according to Forbes Magazine’s report “The Fastest Growing Cities in America” During its heyday from the late 1920s through the 1940s there were over 100 small businesses operating in downtown Sandy Spring employing more than 2,000 people during peak hours alone - many supplied by local families who ran their businesses day-and-night shifts without interruption or paychecks outside of workdays/weekends In recent decades however Downtown Business District has seen significant gentrification with larger office buildings opening up along I-85 while rents haveskyrocketed making Downtown almost unrecognizable from where it once stood . Despite this trend much work remains ongoing in order preserve historic character & integrity of Downtown business district
