The Sandy Springs community was founded in 1885 by James W. Robertson. The community grew rapidly after the Georgia Railroad arrived in 1895, and soon numbered more than 100 homes. By 1907, the community had grown so large that it needed its own school district, and a new courthouse was built in 1911. The community continued to grow until the early 1920s, when a series of devastating fires destroyed most of the homes and businesses in the neighborhood.

The city was founded by General John Cæsar Thomson in 1824 as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River between Atlanta and Savannah. The history of Sandy Springs begins with General John Cæsar Thomson's establishment of a trading post on the Chattahoochee River between Atlanta and Savannah during the early 1800s. From this location, Thomson developed what would become Sandy Springs as a town with stores, homes, churches, schools and other infrastructure necessary for trade and growth along the river system that connected his home base at Fort Ross to development around him. By 1824 general storekeeper Samuel Troup had constructed what is now known as "Troup House" - still standing today - which served as headquarters for local traders until it burned down in 1828 following an uprising by Native Americans against Europeans occupying their lands east of present-day Sandy Spring Road/Georgia State Route 129 (then SR 129). During this time period also occurred one of only two slave revolts in American history - that againstabolized African slavery occurring at nearby Charleston, South Carolina on December 15th, 1840 led to more than 200 slaves escaping from their owner's Plantation near what is now Ponce de Leon Avenue /SR 471 (now Peachtree Street) prior to being recaptured by their owners less than 2 weeks later when Confederate troops attacked.. As part of Reconstruction following civil war America began its return to normalcy following Compromise Of 1850 which ended slavery across all United States including Georgia & Southern Alabama where it continued until 1860 via free white men owning black slaves becoming known as "Emancipation Proclamation". This gave rise to new markets for produce grown throughout southcentral Georgians & northeastern Alabama thanks largely to cotton production expanding into newly opened areas brought about by railroads bringing goods directly from eastern North America under way reducing transportation costs allowing farmers access bothto marketable produce products such as fruits & vegetables; sugar cane; crops such as corn; lumber etc.; while also providing housing opportunities thru land purchases or construction/maintenance grants often received through military or civilian contracts given acreage acquisition status thereby creating towns/cities within states WWI-1940 renamed after adjacent U S Army installations eGroups opening employment opportunities civilians (& many soldiers) employedCivilian Conservation Corps members moving Appalachian Mountainside livelihoods downhill GAH #27
