Sandy Springs, Georgia is a city in southcentral Georgia on the Chattahoochee River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 149,869. The Sandy Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of 309,664. It is one of the most diverse cities in America and has been called "the Athens of the South" because of its intellectual and cultural attractions. The area that would become Sandy Springs was first settled by African Americans who worked as sharecroppers in the nearby rolling hills. A cotton gin was built in 1824 by John Chilton and operated until 1852; it was then used to make flour for Atlanta. In 1853, white man James Sanders purchased 80 acres (30 ha) of what would become Sandy Springs from Moses Wheeler and began to develop it into a town with a sawmill, gristmill, bakery, blacksmith shop, post office, schoolhouse and jail. By 1860 there were 1,500 residents living in 100 small homes. The name "Sandys" came about when early settlers started referring to their surrounding agricultural land as "sandwiches." In 1865–1866 Confederate troops burned down part of town during an effort to reoccupy Atlanta following General Andrew Johnson's victory over Abraham Lincoln at Bull Run Bridgehead. This event helped rally Georgians against Union forces during the American Civil War; many young men enlisted in soldiers' clubs or fought on either side. By 1870 Sandys had grown sufficiently that two rival newspapers were published: The Georgian (founded 1871) and The Nation (1872). When railroads arrived in southern Georgia in 1865 they brought new demand for goods; mills quickly became overwhelmed with production needs so workers migrated northward to find jobs on those railways or took local jobs available only through railroad transportation. Sandy Springs was founded by Captain John Smith in 1763 as a small trading post on the Savannah River. In 1801, it became the capital of Georgia. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army destroyed Sandy Springs during the Atlanta Campaign. The city was abandoned and its buildings demolished in 1865.
