Sandy Springs, Georgia is a small city located in the southeastern corner of Georgia. It is bordered by Chattahoochee River to the east, the Alabama state line to the south and west, and Sandy Springs proper lies on the north side of Interstate 285. The population was 24,774 at the 2010 census. The first people who settled here were English colonists who arrived in 1684. They named their new settlement after Sir Walter Raleigh's shipwreck off Sandy Point onthe Alabama coast. In 1801, General James Wilkinson founded Fort Gaines here as part of his failed effort to create a slave trade empire from Africa. After Wilkinson's death in 1805, control over Savannah passed through his son until it was taken by Confederate forces during the Civil War. At one point Sandy Springs had a population of 506 residents; however, this number decreased rapidly due to economic factors such as cotton fields being developed nearby and competition from cities such as Atlanta and Chattanooga. In 1870-71, construction began on Sandy Springs' first school building which was completed in 1872. By 1880-81, only 10 families remained in Sandy Springs while 3 schools had been built and 2 churches were constructed across town: First Methodist Church (1881) and Second Baptist Church (1892). The last white settler died in 1901 when he moved to Decatur County because there was no opportunity for him to get an appointment with General George Custer at Fort McAllister near Savannah following Indian Wars fought between United States Army cavalry units under Chief Sitting Bulland two Ulysses S Grant's Cavalry Companies led by Colonel George Armstrong Custer
