At that time it consisted of just four blocks long and only one block wide due to its small size relative to other townships in Fulton County at that time One major development for which Sandy Springs is most known are its two high schools – Dooley High School and Regency College Preparatory School – both founded in 1955 as part of a larger effort by then-Governor Folsom to improve education opportunities for low-income citizens statewide What today would be considered Downtown Sandy Springs was once almost entirely rural until the early 20th century when Atlantans began moving into their newer neighborhoods such as Dunwoody and Perimeter Mall . streetcar service arrived in downtown during World War II which made it easier for Atlantans living near Center Street (now Peachtree Road) not only access jobs but also affordable housing close by In recent years much attention has been given to redevelopment taking place along Druid Hills Drive near I-285 including One West Financial Plaza which currently houses Macy's department store while another large project - University Park - will contain apartments, retail stores and a stadium used by Georgia Southern football teams

In 1857, Robertson decided to move his family from Scotland to what is now Sandy Springs in order to start anew. At first, the family only lived in a cabin for three years before moving into their own house. By 1860, they had built a larger house which they named after their father-in-law – Robert Fulton – who had founded Fulton Institute in 1825. The Fulton House continued to serve as their home until it burned down in 1924. After the death of Robert Fulton, many people began making suggestions for naming a new schoolboy colony after him. One suggestion was "Fulton Institute" but it was rejected because it sounded too pompous for such an insignificant town like Sandy Springs. After some more thought, someone proposed "Sandysville." This name seemed appropriate given that sandstoneleigh (a nearby beach) was also called Sandysville on occasion during those early years when residents would take advantage of its crystal clear waters for swimming and snorkelling. The name stuck and has been used ever since by local residents whenever someone suggests changing or expanding our little town's boundaries
Sandy Springs was founded in 1837 by James H. Sandy and his wife Susannah. The town became a center of cotton trade, and early residents were prominent in the local political and business life. In 1881, the city fathers renamed it Sandy Springs, Georgia after General Clarke Griffith, an officer in the Confederate army who had been captured at Appomattox Court House.
