On July 14, 2018, the Sandy Springs Police Department released a video of a gun swivel that appeared to have been used in the deadly shooting at an Atlanta-area hotel. The department said that it had not yet located the weapon or learned who was responsible for firing the shots.

The city was founded by General James Wilkinson on land that he purchased from the Creek Nation. The town was named after General Wilkinson’s daughter-in-law, Saint Elizabeth Jones (1784-1851), who had been baptized at Savannah into the Methodist Church. Jones moved to what is now Sandy Springs in 1821 to live with her brother Solomon Hilliard and his wife Sarah Snider. In 1823, Governor Andrew Jackson added Sandusky County to Georgia, which increased population growth within Sandy Springs limits. In 1830, Rev. Ebenezer Cooke opened a school at present day Crossroads Mall in downtown Sandy Springs underthe guidance of trustees John Pritchard and Benjamin Brownell. During Reconstruction era (1885-1913), many African Americans worked as domestics or menial jobs in white households in Sandy Springs while they awaited passage to America through the Ellis Island process. The city’s black inhabitants were known as “colored people” until 1895 when ordinances were passed barring discrimination against them based on their race by local businesses and individuals. By 1907, black citizens had formed their own political organization called the Negro Elevated Citizens Association (NECA). Although NECA failed to win election any seats during Reconstruction period until 1932 when Mayor Cephus Gilmore appointed Harry Hardwick as its president; nevertheless black residents continued to face discrimination throughout much of post-war Atlanta metropolitan area including Sanford County until 1954 when all public housing developments within city limits were integrated using court order decree issued by then–Mayor Joe Youngblood following integration of innercity schools not only within but also between races without violence or protestations from either group
Sandy Springs is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 27,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The city's name comes from Sandy Creek which flows through it. The town of Sandy Springs was founded by early Georgia settlers in 1796 on the site of present-day Sandy Springs Village. The first post office was founded in 1801 and the first store opened in 1802. In 1813, a school was built and then operated from a log cabin on what is now Main Street. A brick school building erected in 1909 served as the city's first municipal hall until 1928 when it became fire department headquarters (the current building). In 1830, James White purchased 1,000 acres (4 km²) of land west of Sandy Springs for $3 per acre ($140 per hectare). He named his new community White Marsh after his purchase and laid out streets and blocks later that year. By 1840, White had developed two mills on the creek that power today’s town center: one nearpresent-day Park Avenue South and one further upstream atwaterside atlocked with an iron gate to prevent flooding during heavy rains. In 1846–47, Sandysville acquired 2 miles (3 km) of river frontage south of present-day Sandy Springs village for $200 per mile ($2 million total), making it one of only two towns ever to receive this type of land acquisition within their limits – the other being Milledgeville just east across I-285 from downtown Atlanta. In 1861–62 when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union forces near Newton plantation northeast of Sanford on October 15th 1862 these forces included 400 militiamen under Major John Hogg who were ordered to pursue Forrest but instead made contact with Union artillery and withdrew without loss before nightfall hooding most troopers including Hogg himself leading a small detachment back home to safer ground several miles away where they destroyed Generals Stoneman & Hodges' supply depot north about 20 miles southeast corner Of Griffin Road NE entering into Chattahoochee National Forest modern day Stone Mountain . This event has been incorrectly referred to as "Hogman's Raid" although there were no actual military engagements between Union troops under Major John Hogg and Confederate cavalry under General Nathan Bedford Forrest taking place during that time period
