Sandy Springs is a city located in the northernmost part of the U.S. state of Georgia, on the Chattahoochee River. As of the 2010 census, Sandy Springs had a population of 103,827. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert Ewell approached Atlanta with plans to attack that city, he ordered his staff to move south to Sandy Springs in order to rest and provision their troops before making their march northward. By 1870, Sandy Springs had become one of the largest cotton-producing towns in Georgia with mills and plantations dotting its landscape. But like most southern cotton towns during Reconstruction following the Civil War, race relations deteriorated rapidly due to economic factors such as high labor costs and low prices for raw cotton relative to manufactured goods outside of South Carolina or Alabama. African Americans were purged from local businesses and government institutions; many were subjected toJim Crow laws that discriminated against them until well into the 20th century. With few exceptions during Reconstruction ( ensuing decades), white northerners gradually regained control over most aspects of life in late-19th century Savannah & its environs@ through various political machinations culminating in passage of The Voting Rights Act of 1965 which ended racial discrimination throughout large parts of America From 1970 onward until 2000s there was significant growth across all socio-economic categories including professional / technical services jobs @ , healthcare @ , small business @ etc., however gentrification has continued apace with largely affluent black residents moving into older white neighborhoods while poorer families are displaced onto lower income streets/zones within central Sandy Springs In recent years there has been some resistance among young professionals who feel they have lost control over their own lives & neighbourhoods due to gentrification@ while others see it as an opportunity for creativity & new perspectives amid tight housing market conditions

In 1837, a group of American settlers, led by Major General Andrew Johnson, founded the city of Sandy Springs. The town was named for General James K. Polk and his wife, Sarah Sanders Polk. The first settler in Sandy Springs was Dr. David Aiken, who arrived in 1838. By 1840, the town had 10 residents and a small schoolhouse. In 1847, the first courthouse was built in Sandy Springs and it remained in use until1858 when it was replaced by the current one. In 1850, the first post office was established in Sandy Springs and it continued to be used until 1912. In 1861, Confederate General John Bell Hood attacked Fort Sumter on Savannah's East Side and some residents of Sandy Springs aided him in this operation; this helped make Sandy Springs an abolitionist stronghold. For many years after that time there were few permanent residents other than soldiers stationed at Ft Sumter or those living near Savannah due to its strategic location as a gateway into Georgia for Union forces moving southward
