By 1860, over 100 families lived within one mile (1 km) of downtown Sandy Springs along Central Avenue between Second Street eastward and Third Street westward; this patchwork subdivision would remain largely unchanged until after World War II when denser industries replaced farmlands as southernrowth suburban areas developed throughout Appalachia due to low land values resulting from easy access to resources such as water supplies and transportation networks
Sandy Springs is a city in metro Atlanta, United States. It is the sixth-largest city in the state of Georgia and the second-largest city on the east coast of Georgia. As of 2010, it had a population of 317,872. The name Sandy Springs comes from two townships in Cherokee County: Sandy Creek and Springdale. The town of Sandy Creek was established in 1835 by James Auld and others as a post station on the Savannah River between what are now Sandy Springs and Alpharetta. In 1857, Springdale was founded by Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest with help from Commodore John Smith and other investors to supply goods needed for his Indian Wars campaigns against the Cherokee people. It became an important center for cotton cultivation during Reconstruction because it had access to good transportation links both north and south. The city was founded on December 1, 1881 when Sands Point Railway Station opened east of downtown with tracks leading to what is now Peachtree Mall. At that time, Sands Point was one of five stations on a new line called the Atlanta & Augusta Railroad which connectedAtlanta with Augusta, Alabama; Macon County; Newnan County; Paulding County (later Cobb County); and DeKalb County (later Gwinnett County). The railroad was built by businessmen including Homer Davenport who also developed Peachtree Mall which opened in 1989 as one of America's first enclosed shopping malls.
