Sandy Springs, Georgia is a city located in the state of Georgia. The population was 565 at the 2000 census, and 592 as of the 2010 census. It lies within the Atlanta metropolitan area, and is one of the most highly populated areas in that area. The town first originated as an agricultural community on the south side of Sandy Creek. A post office was established there in 1851, and by 1865 it had grown to include a town center with a store, flour mill, telephone line, school and four churches. In 1868-69 local settlers formed a company to develop Sandy Springs into an important commercial center with railroad access and other amenities for southern Georgians. By 1870-71 ownership of Sandy Springs had passed through several hands until it was purchased by John Pemberton in 1875 for $5,000 cash. Pemberton began development of Sandy Springs into what it is today with help from his son Ira Pemberton Jr., who served as mayor from 1912 to 1916 and 1925 to 1929. Ira Pemberton's guidance helped make Sandy Springs one of the most successful small towns in Georgia during this time period; he also founded what is now known as Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPKS) in 1930. During World War II many families moved to Sandy Springs from rural east Chattahoochee Valley communities due to its then-promising prospects for war production; however few residents actually returned home after hostilities ceased in 1945. Afterward many people chose instead to start their own businesses or move away fromAtlanta because they found stability hereabouts after wartime challenges like crime rates which increased dramatically due to out-of-town migration In 1948 GSUSA merged with Coca Cola Company forming Coke Bottling Corporation which has been headquartered here ever since
