Sandy Springs, Georgia is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia that was founded in 1837 by General James Wilkinson and Colonel John Chilton. The population was 105,505 at the 2010 census, making it the 8th most populous city in Atlanta metropolitan area. It is also the largest city east of the Mississippi River. The Sandy Springs community sprang up around a small stream called Sandy Creek which ran through present-day Sandy Spring Township and joined the Chattahoochee River near present day Decatur Street. The first settler in what would become Sandy Springs was Levi Coffin who built his cabin on what is now Park Avenue in 1837. Soon after other settlers arrived including Willard Dixon, Ebenezer Elliott, Elijah Woodruff and Solomon Stroud who erected cabins on present day Mulberry Street and Spring Street respectively. In 1838 an act of Congress authorized Governor Robert Ewell to purchase 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land at current day Sandy Springs for $1 per acre (0.40 ha). By 1840 there were over 100 homes and businesses with a total population of about 50 people living on 1 acre (0.24 ha). In 1845 General Wilkinson moved his headquarters from Chatham County to what would be known as Sandy Springs where he became brigadier general commanding all Union troops west of Middle Tennessee during the American Civil War until his death two years later at age 58 from natural causes while leading a cavalry brigade into battle against Confederate forces under Jubal Early at Chickamauga Mountain north of Chattanooga, Tennessee on September 2nd,1865 according to military records kept by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton By 1870 there were only 10 families remaining in town when incorporation took place that same year with streets named for local citizens such as Jackson Boulevard for General James Wilkinson; Peachtree Boulevard for Colonel John Chilton; Cumberland Avenue for Drury Lane Methodist Episcopal Church; Druid Hills Drive for William Pemberton Holmes; Morehouse Avenue for Seminary Professor Amos Kendall; Willow Lawn Drive for George Washington Harris Dixon Streets were renamed Forsyth Boulevard after General Nathan Bedford Forrest who served as Mayor of Atlanta from 1895-1901 and Macon Road after Commodore James Macon who commanded CSS Florida during the American Civil War before dying in 1865 aged 56 during Sherman's Army's march across Alabama

Sandy Springs was founded in 1837 by Colonel George Washington Smith and his family. The city is named for General James Ross, who led Georgia's victory over the British in 1778. Sandy Springs became a municipality in 1881. In 1950, the city of Sandy Springs annexed the borough of College Park.
