They named their company “The Springfield Armory” after the city of Springfield, Massachusetts. At first, The Springfield Armory produced rifles only. But soon they began producing pistols as well. In 1857, The Springfield Armory produced its first revolver- a six-shot model called the New Model Army Colt revolver. This weapon was successful and became known as the standard for revolvers in America. It was also used by law enforcement officers and other members of the military. In 1875, they produced their first automatic pistol- an eight-shot model called the Automatic Pistol Factory Colt revolver. The heyday of The Springfield Armory came during World War I when they produced over 1 million pistols and revolvers for use by American soldiers on active duty and numerous organizations such as the FBI (the forerunner to today’s Homeland Security). After World War I ended, The Springfield Armory went into decline but resumed production in 1925 with their new design “Springfield Automatic Rifle” (SAR). SAR became one of America’s most popular assault rifles due to its innovative design which allowed it to fire several rounds per trigger pull while still being able to be held unloaded like a rifle
