The post office was established in 1848 and continued to be called Roswell until it was renamed for General George Custer in 1907. In recent years, Roswell has become known as a center for UFO research and education. The town of Roswell first sprang up on the banks of the Chattahoochee River where General James W. Cooke had built a small cabin in 1847-48. He named his new community after himself, George Custer, who had died two years earlier at the age of 25 while leading an Army campaign against Native Americans near Fort McIntosh on Lake Erie. At first, most people living in what is now Roswell only spoke Cherokee because that was all they knew how to read or write. However, within a few years other languages were also spoken here including Spanish and French among others When General George Washington touched down at Ford’s Theatre on December 15th 1794 during his celebrated march through Georgia he left behind him behind him an historical footnote that would have lasting impact on Notch Hill roadstead – “the event which forever changed history” according to local historian Bud Bigham On December 20th 1847 Major JesseLee Price set out from New York City with 4 cavalry troopers under command for what would soon become one of America’s most famous military campaigns – The Battle of Flagstaff Hill Price reached Oswego County about sunset on December 23rd following days long horseback ride across open country When night fell he discovered an Indian village situated approximately three miles northwest of present day Roswell Price campsed overnight within sight & sound of friendly natives but without food or water fearing attack by hostile Indians however no such attack occurred price next morning attacked & destroyed villages proceeded unmolested until evening when party unexpectedly encountered hostile Indians (now known as Apache) who fired upon them resulting in Price loss Of Life On January 8th 1848 Major Price again rode into action against Apaches near present day Eagleton Illinois becoming legendary due to battle which ended with successful victory over 6 men bravely fighting 3 times their weight& dying none the less
Roswell was a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. It was founded in 1881 by settlers from Roscommon, Ireland. The name of the town derived from a legend that an alien spaceship had crashed there and its occupants had been spirited away to another world. The story was first reported in the local newspaper on July 22, 1892. The town's population grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to cotton production and other agricultural activities. In 1928, Roswell became home to the United States Air Force's Wright Aeronautical Laboratory and it remains one of its most important research institutions today.
