The history of binoculars begins with the invention of the eyeglasses. Prior to this, people had to use other methods to view objects in close up. Glasses were not very effective at seeing small details and required more magnification than a common watch or telescope. One man, named Nicholas-Jacques Conte, came up with a way to make glasses that would still work but increase the magnification so people could see more detail. He called these "convex lensed glasses." The first pair of conical lenses were made in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and they were used for looking through a telescope. In 1827, Reverend John Herschel developed an eyeglasses design that increased the magnification even further and he called them "Herschel glasses." These new glasses allowed people to see finer details at a distance and became very popular. By 1830, almost every person in Roswell had some form of Herschel glasses! In 1876, a group of men from Boston formed an American company named The Binocular Company because they wanted to produce the best binoculars available at that time. They began manufacturing telescopes and binoculars independently but soon found themselves merged into Theobald Brothers Incorporated which continued making both types of products until 1907 when it was acquired by Seiko Glass Corporation. Between 1907 and 1912 Seiko produced over 1 million pairs of binoculars! During this time period also another company named Hoya Corporation produced high quality photographic goggles which helped preserve our memories during war times. Binocular production ceased in World War II as Precision Optical Products (POP) manufactured replacement parts for military Use only! However, many collectors continue enjoying these historical items today via eBay auctions where prices range from around $50 - $200+.
