Roswell is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Roswell Field Operations Base (FOB) was a World War II USAAF airfield located within Roswell City Limits and open to all combat aircraft from late 1942 until 1945. According to some sources, the FOB served as an experimental testing ground for new technology used in Project Sign. The town of Roswell was platted in 1881 by Jeptha Haskell and named after General George Armstrong Custer's exploit during the American Civil War at Little Bighorn which killed many Native Americans including Custer's immediate family. The first post office opened in 1882 with William Dillard as mail carrier. In 1886, local farmers Milly Ladd and John Hogue donated land for a schoolhouse and cemetery on what would later become Roswell High School Campus; today's Freeman High School Building stands on this land. In 1927, the newly formed Republic of Georgia purchased 1/8 acre (0.32 hectares) of land adjoining Roswell High School Campus from Hogue and Ladd for $1 (). This parcel became known as "Roswell Army Airfield" due to its location just outside of town limits and because most military activity took place here during World War II ("the war years"). On July 22nd 1947, when USAF Lt Colonel James Egan led his flying squadron consisting of P-38s from Beechcraft Aircraft Company #3 (now Wichita County Sheriff Department) on a test mission over Roswell AFB he radioed controllers back home that he had seen unidentified flying objects "flying like fireflies over [his] head." After investigating these objects further he determined they were not airships or balloons but rather Orions - one of America's first successful flight demonstrations using high-altitude photography! In 1948 Dr Norman Jewett organized an expedition sponsored by the Mutual UFO network which photographed unidentified aerial phenomena over Arkansas while it was still under Republican control before becoming independent as Arkansas observation state USA Today article says: "Dr Jewett began his research into UFOs after seeing an object off Texas' Corpus Christi Bay in 1944 when he thought it might be a Navy ship." A few weeks later he received word from Foster Peake at RAF Alconbury near London who said there were similar objects orbiting Earth being studied by US Air Force pilots based at Eglin AFB Florida...Jewett quickly gathered 500 photos representing every type imaginable quality through hand held automatic cameras..." Unknown Aerial Phenomena Research Organization web page discusses how Dr Norman Jewett compiled his collection: "...about two hundred pictures were taken with various types of camera equipment throughout 1948... nearly every inch of each camera sensor captured detail... even down to individual dents in metal!" Some researchers believe that some sort of energy source may have been responsible for causing these sightings as well! One photo has been called “the skywriting photo” because it shows writing consistent with those found on radar charts associated with UFO activity! On December 8th 1957 three large disks were sighted moving across the sky over Arizona according to witnesses.: On July 29th 1952 while stationed at RAF Hemel Hempstead my roommates Frank Wisner Jr., Ed Whitehurst and I watched three discs without any sign or explanation coming outta them about halfway up into the sky then slowly going downward towards Phoenix we could see them again about 5 minutes later heading straight towards TucsonI remember saying screw you all Godzilla movies thenFrank whispered 'theyre not mountains anymore' Weir went outside looking up only to find out 3 small dots sitting right next to each other 10 seconds later everything turned black & we woke up several hours earlier than usual." As mentioned above some people believe that UFOs could be explanations for what happened on December 8th 1957 However no clear evidence has been found linking UFOs specifically with anything whatsoever related to October 1947 - so no clear proof exists either way!
