Rome, Georgia was founded in 1785 by the brothers George and James Rome. The Rome family settled in what is now Rome, Georgia after moving from Savannah, Georgia. The Romans operated a small grocery store and tavern on the banks of the Chattahoochee River until 1814 when they surveyed and purchased land for a new town called Rome. They named their new town after their father-in-law, General Anthony Wayne who had fought in the American Revolution. The town grew rapidly and by 1828 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1829 the Roman family sold part of their land to Andrew Johnson who built a log cabin near Rome as his home until he became President of America in 1865. In 1868 General Andrew Johnson's son Jonathan bought the rest of the Roma land and made it into Rome again as its official name.
