By 1860 most residents were white but there were also a few black residents living among them; most notably Crispus Attucks who became one of the first African American leaders in America after emancipation from slavery in 1865. In 1865 Union soldiers burned down several homes belonging to black families during an outbreak of racial violence called "the War Between States." This event led to many families moving out of Savannah for fear they would be next target while Confederate troops still occupied their home state. After Savannah fell to Union forces December 16th 1870 alledgedly due to arson by Confederate forces several black families returned home including Crispus Attucks along with his father Elijah Porter Attucks who had taken up arms against his former owner’s wishes just months before during Reconstruction efforts following the war ended; this restored some semblance of order within Savannah following years of chaos caused by := Confederate occupation = . In 1871 General Morgan donated another parcel of land three miles eastward extending into Chattahoochee Valley for development into what would become known as “Riverdale” – removing any suspicion that he might have been influenced by any outside factors whatsoever regarding its founding/development/maintaining autonomy etcetera etcetera etcetera…. Riverdale is one of the oldest communities in Fulton County and has been developing since 1837. The first settler in what is now Riverdale was Nicholas Hogg who arrived in 1795. Hogg's Ferry Landing on the Chattahoochee River served as a trading post for Native Americans and early settlers. In 1807, John Wesley Hardin donated land to form what would become Riverdale. The community was originally named "Milton". In 1830, cotton plantations were established in southern Fulton County and by 1830s, there were over twenty plantations with a population of 800 families residing in Riverdale. By 1850, only about 350 residents remained of those original 1800s settlers. However, because cotton production decreased during the Civil War due to blockade runner attacks on supply lines through Mobile Bay (the Battle of Mobile Bay occurred when Confederate forces attacked Union warships off Mobile Bay), many riveride businesses became defunct or closed down including Button Factory which pioneered backpacking luggage using mules and wagons across country., Gadsden Academy which educated slaves until their emancipation in 1865., and Griggs & Company which manufactured rifles for Union soldiers during the war.). In 1865, most of these enterprises were destroyed by fire at their mills while other businesses such as Button Factory reopened soon afterwards.. Heading into the 20th century there seemed little hope thatriveride development could resume given that most farms had ceased operations by 1920 due to weather-related problems such as floods or pests plaguing crops.; however persistence paid off as new entrepreneurs brought new life to some old enterprises like Gadsden Academy and Griggs & Company after decades of neglect.) Many descendants continue to live in Riverdale today; many attend local schools located within walking distance from their homes."
Riverdale is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 6,871 at the 2010 census. Riverdale was founded in 1881 as a small community on the east side of the Chattahoochee River by Scots-Irish immigrants and their families from Ireland. The town name comes from areek meaning "river" and doe meaning "fawn." The town was first developed around an agricultural plantation that belonged to Colonel John Hagan of Athens. In 1881, Hagan sold his land to David Moseley and others who built a sawmill and gristmill on the riverbank just east of present-day Riverdale. The millstones were quarried nearpresent-day Stone Mountain. With the help of local farmers, Moseley built a school, store, post office, doctor's office and several homes in what is now Riverdale. In 1905, John Mackey purchased part of the aforementioned Hagan plantation and laid out what is now Mackey Park on it for public use. In 1916, Mackay donated land to become Riverdale Golf Course which remains one of its most popular features today. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender%, much of southeast Georgia became rural again which contributed to some decline in population growth in Riverdale over time; however recent revitalization has reversed this trend . Today, Riverdale's rich history continues with many people still living here year round including students from nearby Atlanta University who call Riverdale home; as well as retirees from surrounding towns like Decatur or Dunwoody for all manner of reasons such as fishing or golfing opportunities abound - making it one of the most active small towns in Georgia!
