Riverdale is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 10,868 at the 2010 census. Riverdale is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It was founded in 1837 as a cotton plantation by General John Smith and his family. The town was named for the fast-flowing creek that ran through its center. The first store in Riverdale opened in 1846. In 1865, the first post office opened in Riverdale. By 1870, a school had been built and renamed Riverdale High School after General James Dickey, who served as its first Superintendent. In 1892, what is now Coca-Cola began production on a small farm near where it now stands in Riverdale. Coke bought the farm from Wm Hogg Exchange Company and started producing carbonated water using an industrial engine called the Hogg Engine (named after him). The company grew rapidly and by 1916 had produced over 1 million barrels of soda water per year; this made it one of the largest Coca-Cola companies in history. In 1926, Coke sold its interest in Hogg to PepsiCo for $1 billion US dollars ($ ). In 1932, during World War II, Coca-Cola produced more than 2 billion gallons of syrup for military use alone—more than any other beverage manufacturer—and helped contribute to Allied victory over Nazi Germany . Riverdale is located on the Chattahoochee River about 12 miles (19 km) east of Atlanta. The name "Riverdale" comes from the word "river," which ran through the town and formed its boundary. The first settler in Riverdale was James Cranch, who built a cabin on what is now Mill Street in 1826. In 1829–30, John Cook bought land and established what would become known as Cook's Mills; he also developed nearby Marietta into a thriving commercial center with warehouses and several mills that produced cotton goods such as flour and paper. In 1871, during Reconstruction, federal troops burned down all of Cook's Mills to prevent it from becoming an important black business hub like Memphis or Atlanta. However, many African Americans did continue to work at these mills until after World War II when they were gradually integrated into white society. After years of decline throughout the 1960s and 1970s due to suburbanization and economic stagnation within the mill towns across America, Riverdale began to experience growth in the early 2000s as developers redeveloped abandoned industrial sites around it for residential use or commercial development. This trend accelerated following 9/11 and led to increased traffic congestion along Interstate285 which has since been solved by building new roads adjacent to the milltown itself including Interstate285/Highway 11 East/Highway 140 West which connect with I-85 just south of town limits. By 2009, Riverdale had reached its current population size of 1,814 people according to US Census data – making it one of only two maximum populated incorporated cities in Fulton County (the other being Roswell). The retail sector has seen steady growth over recent years with several major retailers attracted by riverfront location and large tracts of open space surrounding the city outskirts – allowing for more variety in shopping options while still keeping much close access urban amenities such as transportation options available within walking distance’ .
