Riverdale is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 3,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is bordered by Decatur to the east, Sandy Springs to the south, Smyrna to the west and north, and Peachtree City to the northwest. The town was founded in 1872 by George Washington Woodruff and his brother James Woodruff. It was named after Riverdale Road in Philadelphia. In 1882, Timberlake Forest Reserve was donated to Riverdale for public use. The first school in Riverdale opened in 1886. In 1922, a post office called Riverdale was established; it closed in 1980. In 1960, construction began on what would become Riverdale Drive; it became a primary route into town. The community had a volunteer fire department until 1978 when it became municipally funded with city firefighters taking over full time after an appeals process failed to find another donor willing to match federal funds given that detached homes were being built adjacent to main streets while there were no firehouses available within walking distance of most residents. In 2002–2003, work began on renovating Main Street which included new sidewalks and streetlights as well as an addition of two water towers next doorks along with two small grocery stores/cafes inside of old churches (St John’s Episcopal Church & First Baptist Church). This project also involved demolition of several buildings bordering Main Street including: Blacksmith Shop (1892), Elm Cottage (1900), White Settlement House (1893), Two Mrs Green’s Cabin (1896) – all private residences dating back more than 100 years ago – as well as demolishing part of Second Presbyterian Church built between 1851-55 just east of downtown Riverdale limits which served both religious services throughout its lifetime before being demolished starting around 2007 due mainly to lack of attendance during winter months combined with vandalism problems leading up until then by people living near or visiting from outsideRiverdale through windowsills or otherwise opening onto these structures generally unannounced during daytime hours allowing easy observation from rooftops or other vantage points without having any need for identification once inside especially considering that law enforcement officials have made efforts since at least 2006 not only within river valley but also neighboring Decatur Heights & Sandy Springs neighborhoods specifically targeting individuals caught loitering Gang activity has led some people[who?]to dub this “Gangland watching” activities although officially there has never been any evidence linking anyone affiliated with gangs specifically located within or adjacent thereto directly or indirectly responsible for any crimes committed within our community other than those associated with illegal drug trafficking activities taking place elsewhere in neighboring communities without regard for local ordinances prohibiting such activities

The town was founded by attorney and politician George Washington Hill in 1821 as a community on the then-newcoast of Mobile Bay. Hill named it after his ancestral home, which he had recently moved from Virginia to start anew. The town quickly grew, and by 1830 it had a population of about 240 people. In 1837, the General Assembly grantedRiverdale city status, making it one of the first cities in Georgia. It prospered thanks to its booming trade with Alabama and Tennessee and its location on the navigable river. Migration continued to Riverdale through the early 20th century,mainly because of its strategic location: just upstream from Atlanta proper and onetime home to several famous cotton plantations. By World War II, however,riverdale's economy had begun to decline due to increased competition from larger towns along the Chattahoochee River corridor. However, it regained some stability during the postwar period through growth in education and other industries. In recent decades, though,riverdale has seen steady declines in population and economic activity due to increasing competition from newer settlements nearby such as Midtown Atlanta or Macon County's Dahlonega Township. In 2001,the local government decided thatRiverdale would be closure effective January 1st2002 following budget cuts mandated by Governor Sonny Perdue (R).
