riversdale ga history is one of the most rich and diverse in all of south carolina. it has a long and proud history dating back to the Revolutionary War era. during the 1800s, riversdale was a thriving agricultural town with a population of over 10,000. today, Riversdale is known for its idyllic farming villages and sprawling rural communities, as well as its picturesque river valleys. riversdale was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1785 as a small frontier outpost on what is now Riverdale Road. Wilkinson had come from New York City after fighting in the American Revolution and he saw opportunity in this new land he had discovered. He named his settlement after Mount Vernon, Virginia, the home of George Washington. Wilkinson's village grew quickly and soon there were enough inhabitants to call themselves a town. In 1814, Wilkinson sold his land to Colonel John Gordon for £2 per acre. Gordon became Riversdale's first mayor and allowed residents to build their own homes without fear of taxation or invasion by Native Americans. The town continued growth until 1827 when taxes led toGordon's departure from office and city status was Granted to Riversdale under new law that required towns to have at least 500 citizens before they could be granted city rights (although some continue to reside within the boundaries). During the late 19th century, Riversdale experienced rapid growth due in large part to two factors: 1) The opening of Georgia Railroad lines through southern Cartersville which made it easy for farmers to get products directly into market; 2) The development of cotton farming around Highway 12 which led people from Atlanta into rural areas looking for cheaper prices for their goods
The Riverdale community of Georgia was founded in 1811 by General James Wilkinson. The area that would become Riverdale was originally part of the Cherokee Nation and was located on the Chattahoochee River. In 1820, Wilkinson sold the land to Andrew Jackson for $5,000. The town grew rapidly after it became a stop on the Underground Railroad. By 1865, Riverdale had over 10,000 residents and was named one of the "10 Most Productive Towns in Georgia" by The Atlanta Constitution.
