Riverdale, Georgia is a small town located in the lower Chattahoochee River Valley in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 2,872 at the 2000 census. The first settlers to Riverdale were Methodist missionaries who moved from Fort Gaines in 1796. They built sawmills and gristmills on the river and also founded a Baptist church. In 1814, creek traders brought over land for sale in what is now Riverdale. Many of the early settlers were Creek Native Americans who had been forced out of their traditional lands by Anglo-Saxon settlers. In 1821, General Nathan Bedford Forrest founded Stonington Plantation on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River opposite present day Riverdale. Forrest owned most of what is now Fulton County and his plantation was one of the largest slave markets in America. During this time, many Georgians played an important role in Confederate military efforts during the Civil War including Major General “Pete” decentralized command during uprisings throughout much of north Georgia that began on April 12th 1861 with a raid against Chattanooga (now Chattanooga) Tennessee military installations known as "Red Winter", later called "Black Spring". In 1865, when Union General Robert Ewell invaded Atlanta he discovered Burnside's army encamped along Millstream Road just outside of town limits near Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park which Ewell burned on November 8th 1865 as part of his aggressive campaign to capture all Confederate forces within striking distance before they could organize into guerrilla armies and fight back effectively against his advancing forces; this event is widely considered to be one of the most significant strategic blunders by Union commanders during World War II leading to several high casualties among friendly civilian populations including many women and children living near battlefields where these munitions stockpiles lay about
